1. How do I become a qualified lifeguard?
To work as a pool lifeguard in the UK, you'll normally need to achieve the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), the UK's leading pool lifeguard qualification.
The course teaches the essential skills required to supervise swimming pools safely, respond to emergencies, carry out water rescues and provide First Aid and CPR. It includes practical pool sessions, classroom learning and independent assessment
2. What are the requirements before starting an NPLQ course?
Before attending an NPLQ course, you must meet the minimum entry requirements.
You must:
- Be 16 years old or over by the date of your final assessment.
- Be physically fit and confident in the water.
- Swim 50 metres in under 60 seconds.
- Swim 100 metres continuously using both front and back strokes.
- Tread water in deep water for 30 seconds.
- Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool.
- Climb out of deep water unaided without using steps or a ladder where the pool design allows.

3. How can I prepare for an NPLQ course?
The better prepared you are before your course, the more you'll enjoy it.
We recommend:
- Swimming at least twice a week before the course.
- Building confidence swimming both front crawl and breaststroke.
- Practising swimming 50 metres without stopping.
- Improving your general fitness and stamina.
- Bringing suitable swimwear, a T-shirt and shorts for rescue practice, a towel, notebook and plenty of water.
- Arriving well rested each day.
Remember, the course is physically demanding. You'll spend a lot of time both in and out of the water practising rescues, CPR and casualty management.
4. How much does an NPLQ course cost?
The cost of an NPLQ course can vary depending on the training provider, location and what's included.

5. How long does the NPLQ course take?
The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is normally delivered over five days, followed by an independent assessment.
During the course you'll learn:

- Emergency Action Plans (EAP)
- Practical rescue scenarios

7. Can I fail the NPLQ?
Yes.
The qualification includes independent practical and theory assessments that must be successfully completed to achieve certification.

8. How long does an NPLQ qualification last?
The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is valid for 2 years from the date of assessment.
To continue working as a qualified lifeguard, you'll need to successfully complete an NPLQ renewal before your qualification expires.
As part of the renewal process, lifeguards are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) during the two-year qualification period. CPD helps ensure that lifeguards maintain and develop their practical rescue skills, CPR, First Aid knowledge and understanding of current industry standards before renewing their qualification.
We recommend keeping a record of your CPD throughout the two years and booking your renewal course well in advance to avoid any gaps in certification.
