Would You Know How To Keep Your Child Safe Around Water This Summer?
Every summer, thousands of families across the UK head to beaches, lakes, rivers and swimming pools to enjoy the warmer weather.
But sadly, summer also sees an increase in water-related incidents and drownings.
In 2025, the UK recorded 202 accidental water-related deaths, with the highest number occurring during the summer months. August alone saw 31 accidental fatalities, while both July and June recorded 27 deaths each. Experts regularly see numbers rise during periods of hot weather as more people visit beaches, rivers and lakes to cool down.
Many of these incidents happen quickly and often silently.
The good news is that many are preventable through education, preparation and active supervision.

This Summer Remember:
- Stay within arm's reach of younger children.
- Avoid distractions such as mobile phones when supervising around water.
- Choose lifeguarded beaches where possible.
- Teach children to Float to Live.
- Know how to call for help in an emergency.
- Wear suitable buoyancy aids for water activities.
- Respect rivers, lakes and reservoirs as much as the sea.
Looking For Somewhere Safe To Take The Children?
Choosing locations with trained staff, clear safety procedures and lifeguard supervision can provide extra reassurance for families.
For beaches, look for areas supervised by lifeguards and swim between the flags where provided.
For swimming pools, choose facilities with qualified lifeguards and follow local pool rules and guidance.
A little planning before your day out can make a big difference.
