Hotel Pool Emergency Response & First Aid Training
Practical swimming pool emergency response, rescue and first aid training for hotels, spas and leisure facilities across London and Essex.
Prepare your team to respond confidently to swimming pool emergencies with practical, on-site training built around your hotel, your staff and your emergency procedures.

Is Your Hotel Prepared for a Swimming Pool Emergency?
A hotel swimming pool can operate very differently from a traditional leisure centre. Guests may access the pool throughout the day while reception, spa, housekeeping, maintenance and duty-management teams work across different areas of the property.
If someone gets into difficulty, who responds?
HSE guidance states that pool operators should determine through their risk assessment whether constant poolside supervision is required. Where it isn't required, a member of staff needs to be on call and able to respond immediately whenever the pool is in use. HSE says these staff should be trained in pool rescue, CPR and first aid.
Elite Lifesaving Skills helps hotels turn those emergency arrangements into practical skills.

POOL RESCUE
Prepare staff to recognise and respond to a person in difficulty.

FIRST AID & CPR
Develop practical emergency first aid and resuscitation skills.

POOL HEALTH & SAFETY
Help staff understand their responsibilities, pool hazards, emergency procedures and the importance of following the venue's Pool Safety Operating Procedures.
Supporting Your Hotel's Pool Health & Safety
Swimming pool emergencies are uncommon, but when something goes wrong the consequences can be extremely serious.
The UK's Water Incident Database recorded 202 accidental water-related fatalities during 2025, while non-fatal drowning incidents can also result in serious and potentially life-changing injuries.
For hotel swimming pools, there isn't a simple rule stating that every facility must have a lifeguard at all times. The appropriate level of supervision and emergency arrangements should instead be determined through the hotel's pool-specific risk assessment and how the facility operates.
Where constant poolside supervision isn't provided, appropriate emergency arrangements become particularly important.
Training is one part of effective pool health & safety.
ELS supports hotels by developing practical emergency-response skills among staff who may be required to respond when something goes wrong.
Training alone does not automatically make a swimming pool legally compliant. Effective pool safety also depends on appropriate risk assessment, operating procedures, staffing, supervision arrangements, rescue equipment, emergency procedures and the individual characteristics of the facility.

RLSS UK Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award
Practical emergency response training for staff who aren't employed as lifeguards.
The Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award (SPERA) is an RLSS UK award designed for people who have responsibility for responding to a swimming pool emergency by performing a rescue or assisting a lifeguard team.
It can provide an appropriate training route for hotel teams where their responsibilities require swimming pool emergency-response skills.
SPERA is not a replacement for a lifeguard qualification.
RLSS UK explicitly states that SPERA isn't intended to replace the NPLQ. NPLQ contains more detailed training designed to prepare somebody to directly supervise a swimming pool

Emergency Responder's Role
Understanding responsibilities, pool safety procedures and essential safety information.

Emergency Response
Responding to incidents and understanding the Emergency Action Plan.

CPR, First Aid & AED
Developing practical lifesaving and emergency-response skills.
Pool Safety Is a Team Responsibility
Your emergency responder doesn't necessarily have to work in the leisure department.
Depending on your hotel's arrangements, staff undertaking pool emergency-response training could include:

Receptionists
Duty Managers
Waiting Staff

Spa Hosts
Maintenance
Chefs

Gym Staff
Housekeeping
Other Hotel Staff
Candidate prerequisites
For SPERA, candidates must:
Be aged 16 or over
Be able to swim on their front and back
Be able to surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
Be able to climb out unaided without steps or ladders where the venue design permits.
More Than Pool Rescue Training
A swimming pool emergency may quickly become a first aid or cardiac emergency.
ELS can therefore help hotels coordinate their aquatic emergency-response training alongside:

Practical pool emergency response training for hotel staff who may need to act during a swimming pool incident. Develop rescue skills, CPR, first aid and the confidence to respond effectively in an emergency.

Prepare your hotel team for medical emergencies involving guests, colleagues and visitors. Practical workplace first aid training covering a wide range of injuries and illnesses, with options to include AED and additional emergency skills.

Give staff the knowledge and confidence to respond appropriately to fire emergencies. Training covers fire prevention, evacuation procedures, fire marshal responsibilities and practical actions relevant to a busy hotel environment.

Your Hotel Doesn't Stop Operating for Training
We understand that hotels operate around guests, shift patterns, departments and busy service periods.
Where the qualification and assessment requirements allow, ELS will work with your team to plan training around your operation while ensuring the required learning and practical assessment are completed properly.
On-site delivery
Training can take place at your hotel, allowing practical elements to relate directly to the environment in which your team may actually have to respond.
Department planning
We can discuss candidate groups and training arrangements around staff rotas and operational requirements.
Practical venue-focused training
Where appropriate, training can reference your pool environment and existing emergency procedures rather than treating your venue like a generic leisure centre.

Hotel Pool Safety — Myths & Facts
Understanding your hotel's responsibilities around swimming pool safety can be confusing. Here are some common misconceptions.
01
MYTH
Every hotel swimming pool must have a lifeguard.
FACT
Not necessarily. The level of supervision should be determined by a suitable risk assessment considering factors such as the pool, its use, access, users and operating arrangements.
02
MYTH
If our hotel doesn't require a lifeguard, we don't need trained responders.
FACT
Where constant poolside supervision isn't provided, appropriate emergency arrangements are still essential. HSE guidance addresses having competent staff available to respond to emergencies, including appropriate rescue and emergency first aid capability.
03
MYTH
Only spa or leisure staff can be trained for pool emergencies.
FACT
Not necessarily. RLSS UK identifies roles including receptionists, spa hosts, duty managers, housekeeping, maintenance, gym staff, chefs and waiting staff as examples of employees who may undertake SPERA, subject to the course requirements.
04
MYTH
Completing a pool rescue course means our hotel is legally compliant.
FACT
Training is only one part of effective pool health and safety. Risk assessment, supervision, operating procedures, emergency arrangements, equipment, staff competence and the individual facility all need to be considered.
Hotel Pool Emergency Response Training FAQs
