Does My Workplace Need a First Aider

Every workplace is different. The number of first aiders you need — and the level of training they require — should be based on your organisation's first aid needs assessment.

Factors such as the size of your workforce, workplace hazards, shift patterns, working locations and the potential risks employees face can all influence the first aid arrangements you need.

Understand Your Workplace Risks

Consider the type of work being carried out, known hazards and the kinds of injuries or illnesses that could reasonably occur.

Consider Your Workforce

Think about employee numbers, shift patterns, lone workers, remote locations and how quickly first aid assistance could be available.

Choose the Right First Aid Training

Depending on your first aid needs assessment, your organisation may require Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), First Aid at Work (FAW) or other appropriate first aid provision.

What Is a First Aid at Work Course?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) course is designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to respond to a wide range of injuries and illnesses that may occur in the workplace.

It provides more comprehensive training than Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and may be appropriate where an employer's first aid needs assessment identifies the need for a higher level of first aid provision.

During the course, learners develop practical skills including CPR, AED use, casualty assessment and the management of workplace injuries and medical emergencies.

Training combines theory with practical scenarios, giving learners opportunities to practise what they have learned rather than simply sitting through classroom content.

At Elite Lifesaving Skills, we focus on helping learners understand why they're taking an action, how to perform it correctly and how to respond confidently when faced with a real emergency.

The aim isn't simply to gain a certificate. It's to prepare someone to step forward when a colleague genuinely needs help.

What Does First Aid at Work Training Cover?

The First Aid at Work (FAW) course develops the practical skills and knowledge needed to respond to a wide range of workplace injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies.

Training combines first aid theory with hands-on practical exercises, helping learners understand how to assess an incident, prioritise treatment and provide appropriate first aid until further medical assistance is available.

The course covers areas including CPR, AED use, casualty assessment, unconscious casualties, bleeding, shock, injuries and medical emergencies.

Our focus is on giving learners opportunities to practise their skills and build confidence, so they are better prepared to respond when faced with a real workplace emergency.

Comprehensive Workplace First Aid Training

First Aid at Work provides broader training than Emergency First Aid at Work and is designed for workplaces where the first aid needs assessment identifies a need for more comprehensive first aid provision.

Training includes practical skills and knowledge across a wider range of first aid situations, preparing learners to manage both life-threatening emergencies and other workplace injuries and illnesses.

Who Is First Aid at Work Training For?

First Aid at Work is designed for people who may be required to provide first aid within their workplace.

The appropriate level of training should be determined by the employer's first aid needs assessment, taking into account the workplace, workforce and risks involved.

FAW may be suitable for organisations that require a broader level of first aid knowledge and practical skills than those covered by Emergency First Aid at Work.

Higher-Risk Workplaces

Suitable where workplace activities or hazards mean employees could face a wider range of injuries and first aid emergencies.

Larger Workplace Teams

Organisations with larger workforces may identify the need for appropriately trained first aiders as part of their first aid arrangements.

Workplace First Aiders

Ideal for employees who have been selected to take on the role of a trained first aider within their organisation.

Businesses & Organisations

FAW training can support first aid provision across a wide range of workplaces, including offices, leisure facilities, hospitality, education, construction and other working environments.
