Does My Workplace Need Emergency First Aid at Work Training?

Every workplace has different first aid requirements.

Employers should carry out a first aid needs assessment to determine the level of first aid provision appropriate for their workplace.

Where the assessment identifies the need for trained first aiders, Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) may be appropriate for workplaces where the expected first aid response focuses on essential emergency first aid skills.

Consider Your Workplace Risks

Think about the hazards within your workplace and the types of incidents that could reasonably occur.

Consider Your Workforce

Workforce size, working patterns, shifts, absences and different locations can all affect your first aid arrangements.

Choose Appropriate Training

Your first aid needs assessment can help determine whether EFAW or the more comprehensive FAW course is appropriate.

What Is an Emergency First Aid at Work Course?

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is designed to develop the essential knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to provide immediate first aid when someone becomes ill or injured at work.

The course focuses on the initial response to an emergency, including assessing the situation, managing an unresponsive casualty, performing CPR, using an AED and responding to common workplace emergencies.

EFAW provides a more focused level of training than the First Aid at Work (FAW) course and may be appropriate where an employer's first aid needs assessment identifies this level of provision.

Training combines essential first aid knowledge with practical, hands-on activities, giving learners opportunities to practise the skills they may genuinely need to use.

At Elite Lifesaving Skills, we focus on helping learners understand why they're taking an action, how to perform it correctly and how to respond confidently under pressure.

The aim isn't simply to gain a certificate.

It's to prepare someone to step forward when a colleague genuinely needs help.

What Does Emergency First Aid at Work Training Cover?

EFAW focuses on the essential first aid skills needed during a workplace emergency.

Learners develop the confidence to assess an incident, provide immediate first aid and respond appropriately while further medical help is being arranged.

Training combines first aid knowledge with practical activities and hands-on skills, helping learners prepare for situations they could realistically face at work.

Essential Workplace Emergency First Aid Training

EFAW provides focused emergency first aid training and may be suitable where an employer's first aid needs assessment identifies this level of provision.

For workplaces requiring broader first aid training covering a wider range of injuries and illnesses, First Aid at Work (FAW) may be more appropriate.

Emergency First Aid Skills

Learn how to assess an incident, check a casualty and take appropriate action during an emergency.

CPR & AED

Practise CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when responding to a casualty who is not breathing normally.

Injuries & Medical Emergencies

Develop essential skills for responding to situations including unconscious casualties, choking, bleeding, shock and other workplace emergencies.

Who Is Emergency First Aid at Work Training For?

Emergency First Aid at Work training is designed for people who may be required to provide immediate first aid within their workplace.

EFAW may be appropriate where an organisation’s first aid needs assessment identifies the need for trained emergency first aiders.

Lower-Risk Workplaces

Organisations where the first aid needs assessment identifies that EFAW provides an appropriate level of training.

Small & Medium Businesses

Businesses looking to ensure appropriate first aid provision is available when someone becomes ill or injured at work.

Workplace First Aiders

Employees who have been selected to provide emergency first aid within their workplace.

Workplace Teams

Organisations that want multiple members of staff trained in essential emergency first aid skills.

How Does Emergency First Aid at Work Training Work?

Emergency First Aid at Work is designed to provide focused, practical training in the essential skills needed to respond to a workplace emergency.

How Long Is the EFAW Course?

Emergency First Aid at Work involves 6 hours of training, normally delivered over one day.

How Is EFAW Assessed?

Learners are assessed through practical demonstrations and assessment of their first aid skills and knowledge.

How Long Does EFAW Last?

An Emergency First Aid at Work qualification is valid for three years.

Before the qualification expires, first aiders should complete appropriate training if they need to maintain their qualification.

On-Site Emergency First Aid at Work Training

ELS can deliver EFAW training directly at your workplace, making it easier to train your team together without sending employees to an external training venue.

On-site delivery also allows training to be discussed in the context of your own workplace, helping learners relate their first aid skills to situations they could realistically face.

Available across London, Essex, Redbridge and surrounding areas, with wider locations available by arrangement.
