UK Wildfire Emergency Alert: How to Protect Your Family, Home and Workplace
The UK Has Received a Rare Emergency Wildfire Alert
Millions of people across England and Wales have received a Government Emergency Alert warning of an extremely high risk of wildfires following prolonged hot, dry weather and worsening drought conditions. The alert urged people not to light barbecues, campfires, fireworks or anything else that could start a fire, and to call 999 immediately if they discover a wildfire.
While many people associate wildfires with countries such as Spain or Greece, the reality is that the UK is experiencing an increasing number of serious grass and woodland fires. Fire and Rescue Services across the country are responding to record numbers of incidents, placing significant pressure on emergency resources.
Why Has the Government Issued an Emergency Alert?
The Emergency Alerts system is only used when there is an immediate risk to life.
The current alert was issued because:
- Extremely dry vegetation is acting as fuel.
- High temperatures and drought have significantly increased wildfire risk.
- Even a small spark can rapidly develop into a large, fast-moving fire.
- Fire and Rescue Services are dealing with unprecedented demand.
Why Wildfires Are So Dangerous
Wildfires don't just threaten forests.
They can quickly spread to:
- Homes
- Businesses
- Farms
- Schools
- Roads
- Railways
- Power infrastructure
Smoke can also reduce visibility, affect people with respiratory conditions and make travel hazardous.
How You Can Help Prevent Wildfires
Simple actions can make a huge difference.
Never:
❌ Use disposable barbecues on dry grass.
❌ Leave campfires unattended.
❌ Throw cigarette ends onto the ground.
❌ Burn garden waste during periods of extreme heat.
❌ Use fireworks where there is a wildfire risk.
The Government has also announced a temporary national ban on the sale of disposable barbecues while the wildfire risk remains exceptionally high.
What Should You Do If You Discover a Wildfire?
If you see a wildfire:
✅ Move to a safe location.
✅ Call 999 immediately.
✅ Give the exact location if possible.
✅ Do not attempt to fight large outdoor fires yourself.
Early reporting gives firefighters the best chance of containing the fire before it spreads.
